Kinoulton Women's Institute

Kinoulton WI began in 1936, and only closed briefly when the war broke out. Even lockdown didn’t stop us! We carried on meeting on Zoom, staying connected, providing support and learning how to paint spring flowers (amongst other things)!

We have always had a vibrant membership, and currently have approximately 40 members. The WI plays a key part in village life, often supporting local events such as Kinoulton’s Big Night In, the Village Produce Show and the annual Remembrance Day events with our renowned teas, cakes and bakes.

We are a friendly bunch, who look after each other in times of need, but the main aim is to get together to learn and have fun. We don’t sing Jerusalem, we don’t usually make jam, but we often make cakes. What we do do is have a very varied programme of speakers and events each year, ranging from the Tuneless Choir to the Dogs Trust, as well as spa trips, craft events, boat trips, outings and regular walks, many of which
involve tea and cake. Our programme is published on the website, but there is also a regular update in the village newsletter.

This is what a few of our members have said:

“I don’t live in Kinoulton, but joined the WI there with a friend.  I have met a lot of lovely ladies who have become very dear friends.  We have a lot of laughs when we meet, and I go home feeling very happy”.

“Many years ago, I was dragged kicking and screaming to Kinoulton WI. The very thought that I would be joining a load of fusty old women making jam was not my idea of fun. How wrong I was: it has given me much friendship, and the trips, outings and events have been a real treat over the 20+ years I have been a member. I will add that I still don’t make jam, sew, or, to my embarrassment, remember the words to Jerusalem. What I do know is that I have made friends for life, been to places that I would never have visited, and baked and served refreshments at many village events. I have learnt new skills but most of all it has given me a rich understanding of the joy of belonging. It’s not for everyone, but if you give it a chance you may just find that the
stereotypical perception is very different from the actual”.

“When we moved to Kinoulton 4 years ago, I wanted to get involved in village life, and wondered if joining the WI would help? It certainly did the trick…The very first time I went along, people were very warm and welcoming, and I’ve made several friends. There’s always something going on, usually involving food, learning something new or simply going for a walk. I really enjoy the social side of the WI, but also being part of village life. The WI supports many local events, like the Village Show and the Big Night In, which are great fun and keep Kinoulton thriving!”

We meet in Kinoulton Village Hall on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm. Do come along to see what we get up to, we would love you to join us.
